Hi,
I bought a used Sun Blade 100 which has Solaris 10 pre-installed. But I
need to run an application which only runs on Solaris 8. I downloaded
Solaris 8 4/04 media and I start with Volume 1. Everything seemed work
fine until when the disk is partioned and ready to intall, I got the
following error message on console there after:

##messages after /sbin/startinstall
WARNING: /***@1f,0/***@d/***@0,0 (dad0):
Aborted Command
WARNING: timeout: reset bus chno = 0 targ = 0
WARNING: /***@1f,0/***@d/***@0,0 (dad0):
disk not responding to selection
WARNING: /***@1f,0/***@d/***@0,0 (dad0):
offline

##messagers after disk is partitioned and ready to install
Preparing system for Solaris install
Configuring disk (c0t0d0)
- Creating Solaris disk label (VTOC)
ERROR: Could not create Solaris disk label (VTOC)
WARNING: /***@1f,0/***@d/***@0,0 (dad0): offline
ERROR: Could not label disks
ERROR: Could not update disks with new configuration
Could not update disks with new configuration

Here is what probe-ide shows:

Type 'go' to resume
ok probe-ide
Device 0 ( Primary Master )
ATA Model: Maxtor 6Y080P0

Device 1 ( Primary Slave )
Removable ATAPI Model: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8163B

Device 2 ( Secondary Master )
Not Present

Device 3 ( Secondary Slave )
Not Present

What could be wrong? any pointers will be greated appreciated.

It looks like a hardware problem with your disk drive! Do you have a
spare drive you could use to replace it with?

I tried to move DVD-ROM to secondary controller as some people on the
list suggested, but probe-ide could not even detect the device, I tried
both original IDE ribbon-cable as well as a new one.

Any help is appreciated.

OK, guys, problem all solved. The reason DVD-ROM was not recognized was
because I forgot to set the appropriate jumper.

After move the DVD-ROM to secondary master, the installation was able
to continue.
