Printing SPARC - Dell.

I have a nice Dell laser printer (1320c) which serves a couple of windoze
machines via ethernet.
It would be nice if I could also print plain text from a Sun Ultra2 running
Solaris 7 on the same network.

In a spirit of optimism I did try connecting via "lpadmin -p printer -s
ipaddress" and data is transfered, but with only complaining bleeps from the
Dell.

Could anyone kindly suggest an easy method of including the Sun? It is not a
big deal, just a "nice to have" request.

Regards,

Les.

Configure a Windoze machine to be a BSD print server for the Solaris 7
system.
Many years ago I used the directions hidden on this site:

It appears that printer works with CUPS. While installing CUPS on
Solaris isn't trivial, it appears to be one route you could take to
get it to work.

My WAG nstalling anything on his Solaris 7 system won't be
trivial for various technical and business reasons.

The report is that it works with the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint C525A printer.

I don't have direct experience with it, but Dell typically OEMs almost
all its peripherals (and even firewalls, etc) from other companies and
slaps their name on it, so it would not surprise me that this is the same.

Your first step should be to get a port scanning program. Run that
against the printer. It should tell you which ports the printer listens
on.

It has been several years since I needed to do this so the details have
faded.

Try googling for "port scan" site:yale.edu. Run it against the printer
Telnet to each of the ports the port scan found and type "Print
me!<Ctrl-L".

If everything works as expected at least one of the ports should respond
by printing the text "Print me!" and ejecting the page.

Note!!! You should check with your network administrator *before*
running that port scan, or he might get very upset with you!!!!!

If you can't find a "port scan" program, I MAY still have a copy but you
will have to use serious bribery!!

"Many thanks for the suggestions all - there seem to be some useful avenues
to explore there.
