Discussion:
SS20 - dtpad problem
(too old to reply)

Hi,

I've recommissioned an SS20, Solaris 2.6 (installed new, original CD)
Everything works fine. The only problem is with CDE trying to run the
editor 'dtpad'. It can only be started by typing 'dtpad &' on a terminal
which of course is not the normal way to handle things. Neither calling
from a menue, nor clicking a file works. In this case nothing happens
but an error message comes up after a minute:
Action: TextEditor ERROR
The request to service this action has failed by the following reason:
TT_ERR_PTYPE_START The attempt to launch an application to handle a
ToolTalk request failed. This may happen if the requested application is
not ins...<<

This probably means "...not installed" but can't in fact be read because
the message window is to small.

Apart from that everything seems to work fine.
Any ideas?

regards
Michael

It is a _very_ long time since I used one of those, but I do recall there
were some issues with tooltalk. My recollection is that the first
application that needed tooltalk started it up, and then it kept on running
until you explicitly killed it.

If you start dtpad from the command line, does an instance of tooltalk
start at the same time? Or, is there already an instance of tooltalk
running? What about the other dt applications?

I never took to the CDE myself. If you are resurrecting the ancient, why
not step back to olwm at the same time?

Thank you for answering.

'ttsession' is always running
no new instances are started
dtpad is the only application to cause this error
everything else works

olwm? why not... CDE happens to be the default with Sol 2.6. Every wm
that gives me a few windows suits my needs. I'm only writing code. In
this regard it makes no difference what machine I'm on, as long as it
runs Unix :-)

Try killing ttsession, then starting dtpad. Does ttsession come back?

You can start ttsession manually as /usr/dt/bin/ttsession.

Do you have the latest ToolTalk patch installed?

Olwm was much lighter than CDE. Faster to load, less hungry on resources.
If you are only coding, it might be a better choice.

Neither group 'staff' nor 'root' can. I don't care too much about OS
stuff but I vaguely remember Sun tightening its security policy at some
point, e.g. logging in as root via rlogin, ftp, etc. is disabled, etc.

Seems you can't kill it and only one ttsession is allowed to run at any time

In fact I don't know. OS is Sol 2.6 dated 5/98.

I actually still have a CD containing olwm but I'm afraid Solaris won't
accept it easily.

The whole thing is more or less a crazy idea of mine. It happens I've
got some Suns in perfect working order together with the original CDs.
Why not using them? I don't want to give you a lot of trouble fixing
out-dated workstations.

Michael
